So what’s not to like? Rather than enumerate complaints, the real question concerns the development cycle. So far, Safari 3 has made for a better Internet experience, so much so that I intend to make it my default browser now.
I have had no crashes of the beta in a day or so of constant use with with both the Intel and PPC version. It’s not only faster, but I’ve noticed better compatibility from at least one site already, Blockbuster Online. And that’s about it, at least in terms of features, but that’s not all there is to Safari 3. Searching bookmarks and browsing history is also available. However, users can now add multiple bookmarks at once from tabs. The rather plain Bookmark management is largely unchanged visually. Under History on the Menu Bar, are options for session management, allowing users to open the last closed window and all windows from the last session. If you are typing in a form and attempt to close the window, you will be warned. For those who use message boards like the Open Forum on Ars Technica, you can now resize the text boxes. If you type in an URL that Safari can’t find, the 404 page adds an option to search in Google. There are also a few more features that really don't deserve a screenshot. That’s right, orange! Then it dims to gray highlight, unless you search again-then more orange! That's the other big change to the UI in Safari. Now when you search, the screen dims whether you want it to or not, while the found text glows orange. The separate Find Text window has been eliminated in favor of a temporary search bar, but the innovation doesn’t stop there. However, at this stage in development features are likely set, and you need to do a little looking for new features in Safari 3. Besides, a zippy browser probably relies on a lot of RAM caching, and betas get a pass on resource usage anyway. Some people will decry this, but remember that RAM resellers have children to feed, too. After a relatively short time browsing few windows, RAM usage was around 200 MB. What is not subjective is that Safari 3 likes RAM. This seemed especially true when using the PowerBook, but again, this a subjective observation. Using Safari 3 on a 2.0GHz Core Duo iMac and a 1.25GHz PowerBook, my perception was that pages were rendering faster. Setting aside performance tests as marketing, Safari does "feel" faster to me. You will have to wait for Leopard for a new look for Safari, but there is a new feel.

Brushed metal still uglifies the interface, even if one is using software like ShapeShifter.
There are no new “secret” features or features that are currently plug-ins, like ad-blocking beyond pop-up windows. There are no radical changes to the UI, no drawer like OmniWeb. The look of Safari 3 is the look of Safari 2, which is the look of Safari 1. At any rate, it’s the price of progress, so what’s the evolution of Safari 3 look like?

Unfortunately, the author is ceasing development, though he is currently considering whether to publish the source code or set up an open-source project. One of my favorite plug-ins is Sogudi, which lets you take URL shortcuts from the address bar. The Safari 3 beta does not play well with them, and here I found my first disappointment with Safari 3-not Apple’s fault. I was just glad there was an uninstall package that restores Safari 2, as I use input managers and plug-ins.

Installation is simple enough, though HIG purists and Mac OS graybeards may grumble at an application that requires both an install package and a restart. In many ways, Safari 3 seems a lot like Safari 2, but first things first. Using Safari 3, you might not notice either.

Sure, the Safari 3 beta for Mac OS X was also released to the public, though you might not know it looking at Apple's web site. In perhaps the only real surprise for nondevelopers at the WWDC Keynote-developers were surprised by getting screwed on the iPhone SDK-Steve jobs introduced Safari 3.
